Soma Pilates News July 2008
Welcome to Soma
Pilates
Welcome to Somatikus, Soma Pilates News!
Sorry it has taken many months to produce, but as i found out
setting up and running a studio requires a LOT of work! This month
sees many great changes, including the arrival of two new staff
members, Mandy Jennings and Kirsten Jorgensen who will be looking
after the studio in my European escape.
Feel free to email me between now and september:
elise@somapilates.com.au, however my mobile phone will not be
answered so any queries are best directed to the studio [03 9596
4476].
A little bit about our new instructors:
Kirsten has a Bachelor of Music
majoring in Classical Vocal Music. Kirsten discovered Pilates
through an injury which prevented her from running and found it
beneficial for providing a full body workout with a focus on posture
and breathing. She was then inspired to become a Pilates Instructor,
completing a Certificate IV in Pilates Instruction and is looking
forward to continuing her training in the future by completing her
Diploma of Professional Pilates Practice. Kirsten is Studio
Coordinator whilst I am away.
Mandy has a Certificate IV in Pilates
Instruction through Pilates International Training Company and has
been teaching Pilates for many years. Mandy discovered Pilates
through her own injuries and found it a gauranteed way to relieve
pain, align her body and return her to good health. She is excited
to deliver the knowledge she has acquired over the years of
practicing, teaching and living the benefits of the Pilates Method
to you!
My Travels: I am currently in sunny London
[actually, sunny for only my first day then miserable ever since!]
enjoying all it has to offer, including the sale at Harrods which I
visted today and made good use of! Have walked the Thames, visited
the Tate, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Picadilly Circus,
Shakespears Globe and have been enjoying hanging out in Chelsea in
between. Later this week on to Rome and then Spain. Will keep you
updated, and incidentally, [especially for your Brett] I have
managed to pull out atleast a few mat workouts in the spacious
surrounds of my little Chelsea B&B as promised!
This is the Torturer Over and Out!

Energy Update:
Returning to Center
“Whether you laugh or cry, your center is
involved…” Martha Graham
2008 is all about finding your alignment with
center. The energy of 2008, is New
Beginnings [1], and means many of us feel like we are standing
on shaky ground. Hence, the sacred anatomy of our center, including
the Pelvic Floor [PF], Transverse Abdominis [TA] and Illiopsoas
complex[IP], are high-priority. All three connect into meridians and
chakras that govern the lower torso, commonly refered to as our
"core." The Hindu Chakra system[2] recognises this anatomy as
the Base and the
Sacral energy centers, associated with
beginning phases, hence its’ major role to play this
year.
Base energy relates to security and stability, ensuring
that basic physical needs are met, while the sacral center governs
our emotional balance. These two areas command our
ability to stay grounded in order to manifest our desires into
reality. This mix brings about profound miracles and sudden change;
consequently the feeling of being in the ‘eye-of-the-hurricane’ is
strong for many right now. [ Incidentally, the bizarre and dangerous
weather patterns around us are tragically demonstrating this right
now]. Manifesting as challenges presenting in financial
circumstances and lifestyle security, many are facing the need to
center to calmly see us through to our new places.
Physically many of us are experiencing alignment issues around
these centers. The Base, Muladhara, translates directly from
Sanskrit as “root support” and governs the sciatic nerve which is
the largest peripheral nerve in the body, running from the sacrum
down the leg to the feet and appearing not to dissimilar to the root
system of a tree.
The Sacral Centre, Swadhisthana translates into “one’s own abode”
and is innervated by the sacral plexus nerve. Thus, these two
centers combine to encourage us to retreat from the chaos
surrounding us to our center. In other words, to be effective, be
in center…
Now more than ever an awareness of the center from a
trinity [mind, body & soul]
perspective is essential for maintaining balance! The times you will
‘stay afloat’ are times when you remain calmly connected to your
inner reserve.
If the stabilising muscles of the base and sacral centers are out
of alignment, consider why this is taking place. Which of your
cognitive patterns or long-term behaviours are out of step with the
new energy of 2008? This will be especially poignant in relation to
your self-image and close relationships.
The quickest way to align with center it is through breathing.
Pilates breathing along with eastern practices, encourages the
engagement of the pelvic floor, helping to restore balance to the
lower energy centers. When we are aligned with center we are
healthy, happy and making appropriate life choices. Lets
align with centre through the below exercise.
Return To Center Exercise: Coccygeal-Sacral Breathing
All exercises are intended for healthy clientele, please seek
medical advice before attempting them.
Prior to beginning the exercise stand upright with your eyes
closed and gain a sense of your natural centre. This will be
reviewed at the end of the exercise:
- Lying supine, legs bent at 90 degree angle with feet connected
to the floor, arms relaxed by the side
- Allow the rhythm of your breath to pass through your body like
a wave, massaging the skeleton, musculature, connective tissue
into its more appropriate alignment.
- As you exhale visualize the diamond structure of the base of
the pelvis, corresponding with the lotus of the base chakra,
drawing inward and upward towards the centre of the body.
- Inhale and allow the diamond points to expand, stretching the
pelvic floor.
- Moving you hands to your tummy, notice what naturally
transpires in this area as a result of your pelvic floor
connection. The center, begins to represent the move towards the
sacred sacral center.
- Visualise a point of energy where these two muscle connections
meet. Now visualise the third psoas connection and finding the
very centre of the body and resonate with this center.
- Spend as much time as you need connecting to centre. When
done, stand and return to your upright position. What does it feel
like to find your natural centre now? Return to this centre as
often as possible through out the day.

Oxfam
Trialwalker 2009
Oxfam TRAILWALKER is the world's greatest team
challenge. And it's also one of the toughest. The challenge is to
get a team of four across 100km of Australian bush in less than 48
hours - and, collectively, to raise at least $1,000 to help to
overcome poverty and suffering around the world. Soma Pilates is
hoping to enter at least 2 teams!
Oxfam TRAILWALKER is all about teamwork - it is a great way for
pilates friends to develop team spirit. You start together, go
through each checkpoint together, and finish together. We'll have to
train and fundraise together beforehand. Oxfam TRAILWALKER is
challenging - but you don't need to be a marathon runner or a
professional athlete to do it. With training and the right mental
attitude, just about anyone can complete in the event.
How can you be involved?
1. As a Participant: This will involve dedicated training from
september 2008- april 2009 when the event is held. Even if you don't
want to be apart of the teams but would like to get fit with us you
are welcome to join in!
2. As a Volunteer: we need a support crew of helpers, cooks,
massage therapists etc for the two days... if you know any one or
would like to help PLEASE let us know
3. Donate: More on that via email to come!
$20 can provide basic medical supplies for one month for a person
living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Read about other programs that
your donations support.
$30 can fund the construction of ponds for sustainable fish
farming in Laos. Read about other programs that your donations
support.
$50 can pay the school fees for a child in South Africa whose
parents have died or are ill as a result of HIV/AIDS.
$100 can support the development of a vegetable garden to provide
food for poor families in South Africa. Read about other programs
that your donations support.
More info on how to donate in September!
